Wormeli writes about 3 types of assessment: preassessment, formative assessment, and cumulative assessment. "Many teachers make the mistake of spending considerable energy designing a culminating project or test, but its end-of-unit nature limits impact on student learning. Students can't use the feedback they gain from such assessments to grow. A better use of energy, then, is for teachers to spend considerable time and effort designing and using formative assessments offered in route to summative achievements. These frequent checkpoints are where students learn the most. They allow teachers to change course mid-journey, and they keep students and their parents informed - positives all around." Moving towards the end of my first SBL unit I am finding that I do like the flexibility in making formatives serious (as if a quiz) or light and stress-less (such as a check-in). I am also pleased that I chose a summative test to be 3/4 of the way through the unit, rather than the end. This allows the last quarter to be fluid. Many students will move forward with the Humisence summative (seriously, we need a new name) and others who were not able to demonstrate mastery of the targets can work more closely with myself or Daniel (Special Educator) to show mastery before moving ahead. Further, some students can move onto Level 4 opportunities as they become ready.
